htmlcsstoimage alternative: when Cofferdock makes sense (and when it doesn't)
htmlcsstoimage is probably the best-known API for turning HTML into images. If you're looking at it, or you already use it and want another option, here's an honest comparison with Cofferdock. We'll also tell you when you're better off staying with them.
Prices are the ones each website listed on 14 September 2026. They can change, so check them before you decide.
What both of them do
Both take your HTML and CSS and give you back an image. They're used for the same things: social cards, Open Graph images, certificates, tickets or thumbnails generated automatically from n8n, Make, Zapier or your own code.
Pricing
| Images per month | htmlcsstoimage | Cofferdock |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 50 | 50 credits |
| ~500 | from $14 (1,000 images) | €9 (500 credits, Pro plan) |
| 1,000 to 3,000 | $14 to $29 | €29 (2,000 credits, Business plan) |
| 10,000 | $69 | €79 (10,000 credits, Scale plan) |
| More than 10,000 | plans up to 1 million | custom |
On Cofferdock, the annual plan costs 10 months (two months free).
Where htmlcsstoimage wins
- Volume. If you generate tens of thousands of images a month, their bigger plans are cheaper per image and go much further.
- Image-specific features: batches, S3 storage, proxy support and templated images saved on their site.
- Track record. They've been around for years and have plenty of ready-made integrations.
If all you need is HTML to image, and lots of it, htmlcsstoimage is a very good choice.
Where Cofferdock wins
- One balance for 25 tools. The same credits cover HTML to image, HTML to PDF, website screenshots, QR codes, charts, merging or splitting PDFs, filling forms, converting images, creating zips and validating emails, phone numbers or IBANs. If your automation does several of these, you pay for one subscription.
- A cheap starting point: €9 a month for 500 credits, without jumping to 1,000.
- Built for n8n and Make: you can send the HTML raw and get the image back directly, with no base64, and there are step-by-step recipes.
- Templates with data: send
templateplus your texts, and skip writing the HTML. - Servers in the European Union, and nothing you send is stored: it's processed and discarded.
- For AI assistants: an MCP server to connect it to Claude, Cursor or n8n.
How to switch
If you already call htmlcsstoimage from n8n or Make, the change is small:
- Create a free account and an API key on Cofferdock.
- Change the URL to
https://api.cofferdock.com/capture. - Put the key in the
x-api-keyheader. - Send the HTML in the
htmlfield (or as atext/htmlbody) and setwidthandheight.
Every option is in the API reference.
In short
- Images only, at high volume: htmlcsstoimage.
- Images plus something else (PDFs, QR codes, screenshots, charts…) or a few hundred a month: Cofferdock is better value.
You can try Cofferdock on the free plan, no card needed, and compare the result with your real HTML.
